Bumponomics in a Nutshell
If you had to draw the entire theory of Bumponomics on the back of a napkin, this is what it would look like.
1. The Core Problem with Economics
For a century, traditional economics has been obsessed with measuring transaction volume (GDP). It is a Problem-Solving Economy that treats the environment as an infinite resource to be extracted. It assumes problems are "glitches" that cost money and must be swept under the rug as quickly as possible. Ultimately, it measures spending, not enrichment.
2. The Radical Shift
Bumponomics flips the model entirely: Problems are the catalyst for progress. If there are no problems, there is zero action, zero narrative, and no business. We posit that the fundamental atomic unit of human organization is the problem itself.
Our world is full of BUMPS (Big Untransformed Meaningful Problematic Situations). These BUMPS act like a magnetic force, naturally attracting humans to organize and cooperate to solve them. By consciously transforming problems, we enrich our ecosystem instead of depleting it.
3. The Transformation Engine
To transition to a Problem-Transforming Economy, we need a new engine. Humanity naturally approaches problems through three layered filters:
- HUMPS (Human Understandings): How individuals subjectively perceive the friction.
- BUMPS (Big Untransformed...): The macro, objective problem in the environment.
- LUMPS (Localized Untransformed...): The fragmented, siloed symptoms of the BUMP.
Organizations must evolve into PTOs (Problem-Transforming Organizations). Using the Triple-Diamond PTO Process, they ingest BUMPS from the environment, run them through an intentional series of micro and meso transformations, and eject higher-value macro outcomes back into the world.
4. Measuring True Value
If we aren't measuring transactional GDP, what do we measure? In Bumponomics, wealth is measured systemically:
- GIVE (Gross Increased Variety of Environment): The total enrichment and new capabilities returning to the ecosystem.
- GMP / GPO: Measuring the maturity of the problem management process and the organizational capability to handle friction.
The Bottom Line
Capitalism is evolving. Bumponomics is the playbook for harnessing the raw, magnetic energy of our biggest problems and transforming them into an economic system that enriches rather than exploits.
