1.2.4 The Outer System: Our Planet
The Micro, Meso, and Macro systems do not exist in a vacuum; they operate entirely within a physical reality—the Earth's biosphere. This is the ultimate "Outer System."
The Physical Super-System
The Earth is fundamentally a closed thermodynamic system (with the exception of solar radiation entering, and heat escaping).
In relation to the economic systems nested within it, our planet serves two strictly physical functions:
- The Source of Exergy: It is the origin point for all raw materials and available energy required to physically fuel the production and operations of the lower economic levels.
- The Sink for Entropy: It acts as the physical environment that must absorb the waste, heat, and physical byproducts generated by economic activity.
Unlike the economic layers, the Planetary level does not operate on policy, prices, or contracts. It operates strictly on biological, chemical, and physical laws, reacting mechanically to the extraction and emission variables introduced by human systems.
