The Assumptions
There are a specific set of assumptions that underpin our understanding of reality within the BUMPS ecosystem. To utilize this framework, we must agree on the constraints of the board we are playing on.
Key Cognitive Constraints
- Humans sense and perceive their world through a limited range of inputs.
- Our Environment determines the range of problems we can experience and our options for addressing them.
- Humans form problems based on their state of being and their perception of their environment.
The Constraints of Bumponomics
Our scope is constrained to a specific foundational formula:
Progress = f(planet, people, problems)
- Progress is a vector, not a destination. It requires both Direction and Magnitude.
- f() is a non-linear function.
- Planet represents the absolute constraints of the environment (Space).
- People represents a subset of the participants in the space. (Note: When using this formula, 'participants' can encompass non-human or non-individual entities).
- Problems are the anomalies in the space that the participants experience.
Linear vs Circular Causality
We reject purely linear causality (A causes B). Instead, we embrace circular causality—a principle of systems theory and cybernetics where events are interconnected in a feedback loop. "A influences B, which in turn influences A".
The Theory of Incomplete Contracts
Due to bounded rationality and imperfect information, parties cannot foresee all future events. We must operate in a reality with gaps that require someone to hold residual control rights. This helps explain the boundaries of our systemic interactions and why some variables must remain internal (integrated) to prevent opportunism.
Analogue Over Digital
Analogue systems beat digital systems every time. They are capable of capturing the true continuous gradients of systemic transformations.
